Death Cab For Bigotry

by Jeremy Hooper

This is Death Cab For Cutie's song, "Grapevine Fires":

A perfectly nice song to which the "fag hating" folks at Westboro Baptist Church have made some perfectly disturbing alterations. Leer at the icks:

A Matter of Time
Inspired by Death Cab for Cutie’s “Grapevine Fires”

When the wind picked up, the fire spread.
And old Sodom’s vine good as dead,
And the Northern sky looked like the end of days, the end of days.
The watchers warn that his curses loom,
Sounding like an alarm of impending doom,
To warn you it’s only a matter of time.
Before you all burn…
Before you all burn…
Before you all burn…
Before you all burn…

You prop your shrines and your idols up,
Only wrath so cruel left to fill your cup,
And founded the seminaries on your lies, on your lies.

Now there’s no escape as the blood flies
And we watch the stark terror fill your eyes
And even now you’re not contrite
Against God’s word, you vainly fight.
You vainly fight…
You vainly fight…
You vainly fight…

Now you hate God’s law, so you lied on Him and taught rebellion
And your legal crimes, fanned His rage.
And you wouldn’t bow and kiss the Son, though it’s your only hope
So now in Hell, burn away
You’ll burn away…

You heard our words, you saw our signs.
And even though you do malign,
You know it is only a matter of time…

::sniff, sniff:: Do we smell a Grammy? ::sniff, sniff:: Oh, no, that's the scent of crazy-ass craziness. ::sigh:: We always get those two confused.

***NOTE: This full Westboro lyrics sheet can be found on their blog. However, a link from us is something these aspiring Bernie Taupin's will never receive.

Your thoughts

Could Death Cab for Cutie sue?

Nah. And we wouldn't want them to. Parody deserves protection.

I very much doubt Ben Gibbard (the lead singer) would pick these modified lyrics up any time soon. In fact, the response may be less than lyrical. Will be interesting to see.

I also doubt WBC will cover any more songs by the same artist. Then again, there is always the opportunity to turn 'Death of an Interior Decorator' to something much less than good music.
