'Dump' truckin' to November 8
As the weather creeps towards the cold side, the attempt to keep Focus on the Family's Dr. Dobson out of the Radio Hall of Fame is really heating up. Thursday morning in Chicago, the Dump Dobson Coalition will hold a press conference where they will urge officials with the Museum of Broadcast Communications to rescind the notoriously anti-gay leader's award or face a protest outside of their Nov. 8 ceremony. They will also use the presser to unveil a new full-page "Hall of Shame" ad that will debut in The Chicago Tribune the following morning.
This from a Dump Dobson press release:
"Bruce DuMont would never honor a Don Imus, disgraced for his anti-African American remarks," said Bob Schwartz of the Chicago-based Gay Liberation Network. "Nor would 1930s radio icon Father Charles Caughlin -- the widely syndicated pro-Nazi and anti-Semite-- be feted. Yet, in honoring James Dobson, Mr. DuMont appears to promote a 'gay exception' to the standards of public civility and decency rightly accorded other groups of people."
"There is still time to reverse the reckless and irresponsible decision to honor James Dobson in the Radio Hall of Fame," said Truth Wins Out's Executive Director Wayne Besen. "It is unconscionable that the Museum is giving its imprimatur to a demagogue who has profited from divisive and discriminatory rhetoric. If the museum wants to regain its respect and credibility, it will dump Dobson."
Valid points. This is, after all, a man who causes untold grief for millions of people on a daily basis. This isn't a personality who simply holds conservative values or raises controversial issues -- this is a man who fronts one of the most well-financed, well-connected anti-gay organizations on the planet. There is a direct connection between the pain that gays feel and the rhetoric that Dr. Dobson broadcasts. He may not use nasty terms like "nappy headed hos," but he has done everything in his power to decry "nappy gay-headed households." For those of us who have been forced to pause our lives to fight for decent treatment and civil parity, this "honor" could not be much more dishonorable.

Your thoughts
We should remember that the militant, anti-American fundamentalists at "Focus on the Family" hate women and atheists as much as they hate lgbt people.
