We will NEVER respect you, Ron Prentice. Never. Not ever. Not possible. No.
"we hope there can be a healing among all and a continued respect for the diverse views that have been expressed during this campaign"
What "diverse views" are being discussed in the above comment? One that says gay people are not able to enjoy the equality that they were granted vs. one that wishes to have their rights protected from majority tyranny
How were they expressed during the described campaign? With a deceptive campaign that set up straw men arguments about "child protection" and "traditional values," deeply offending anyone whose families happen to include gay people.
Why is "healing" needed? Because a team of self-professed morality police waged a needless, hurtful, costly war against constitutional equality.
What sort of "respect" is being sought? Respect for the idea that one's personal religious views should be free to deny others' civil equality. Oh, and respect for these religious folks' right to disrespect LGBT people.
Why is the quip phrased the way it is? Because it helps the speaker sleep better at night. After all, if he admitted to himself the truth, which is that his cruel and discriminatory endeavor has absolutely gutted millions of gay people, and if he acknowledged that this campaign embraced the sort of bias that is worthy of the strongest form of disrespect words can possibly muster, he would have a tougher time congratulating himself on this "win."
Now that we've said all that, go read Ron Prentice's official statement regarding the "yes on 8" "victory":
This is a great day for marriage. The people of California stood up for traditional marriage and reclaimed this great institution. We are gratified that voters chose to protect traditional marriage and to enshrine its importance in the state constitution. We trust that this decision will be respected by all Californians.
The Yes on Proposition 8 campaign has been the single largest, most powerful grassroots movement in the history of American ballot initiative campaigns. We raised approximately $40 million from over 70,000 individual contributors. We recruited the active support of over 100,000 volunteers who gave tirelessly of their time and energies to our cause. We could not have won without them! These dedicated volunteers have visited millions of homes, made millions of phone calls, distributed over one million yard signs and displayed one million bumper strips. The silent majority is alive and well in California.
Proposition 8 has always been about restoring the traditional definition of marriage. It doesn’t discriminate or take rights away from anyone. Gay and lesbian domestic partnerships will continue to enjoy the same legal rights as married spouses. Our coalition has no plans to seek any changes in that law.
While it will take a few weeks to finish counting all the votes, Proposition 8 takes effect at midnight tonight. Just as it was before the Supreme Court’s ruling, only marriage between a man and a woman will be valid or recognized in California, regardless of when or where performed.
This has been a hard-fought campaign on both sides. Now that the people of California have decided this issue, we hope there can be a healing among all and a continued respect for the diverse views that have been expressed during this campaign.
The outcome of this race is being closely followed in every state in the nation, and in countries throughout the world. California’s vote in favor of traditional marriage should give the silent majority comfort that they do have a voice and can and should stand up for this precious institution in legislatures throughout the world. Marriage is between a man and a woman.
Statement on Proposition 8 Passing by Ron Prentice ["protect marriage"]
**Oh, and this thing is FAR from over. First, we are going to see to it that every last vote is counted. And if Californians still made the biased choice? We will fight it in court. Because this is wrong. This is unjust. And neither idea deserves even the beginnings of "respect."
Your thoughts
Will the gay couples already married in California be able to remain married? Or is it going to be taken away?

"Will the gay couples already married in California be able to remain married? Or is it going to be taken away?"
I think the Proponents of the Yes on 8 will fight to make sure its retroactive. Any gay marriages performed previously will cease to be a marriage.

You've got to be kidding me.
"Protect" marriage?
From what?
What are we going to do to it? Other than get married, of course.
Nothing.
N. O. T. H. I. N. G.
God, this is making me so depressed. *laughs* Since when has "equality" meant "let's oppress all gays and lesbians"?
Since when did "respect" mean "slander gays"?
And since WHEN did "diverse" mean "everyone BUT the gays"?
I think I need to brush up on my grammar skills, cuz I don't understand the anti-gay language.
I think maybe these people need to go back to school and learn what the words "equal", "respect", and "diverse" mean.

Don't like Prop 8??
Send the miserable Bigot who created it a "well worded" letter (or you know, maybe a giant turd):
Ron Prentice,
California Family Council
1107 9th Street, Box 24
Sacramento, CA. 92814
If you send a letter, and your friends send a letter, and *their* friends send a letter, I don't think it will be possible for Mr. Prentice to hide from his bigotry in the shadows, and most importantly- won't be able to hide from himself.
Or better yet- show up at his front door.
For God's sake- one would think that someone who believes in God, and who is a Christian would show love and tolerance for **ALL** people (you know- like Jesus did?), and not just one totally biased, completely slanted, totally HATEFUL and NARROW viewpoint.
