United we could stand, but divided is what they've been working since fall

by Jeremy Hooper

You know we gays are always accused of "hijacking" the African American civil rights movement? Yea, well check out this latest quip from major Prop 8 proponent Maggie Gallagher and tell us who is REALLY exploiting race here:

"It's appalling but unsurprising: Throughout the course of the same-sex marriage litigation, Jerry Brown used his discretionary power behind-the-scenes to sabotage Prop 22 and to defeat Prop 8. Now it's official: he's siding with gay marriage activists over 7 million Californians, including 70 percent of Black Californians, who voted to protect marriage. How can the archetypal white liberal Jerry Brown ask the court to do such a thing?"

Good As You Images Good As You Images 200810280951See what we mean? Those two clumsy, superfluous mentions of race? In this particular instance, there is absolutely no reason for Maggie to mention the Black Californian stat, nor is there a reason for her to mention Jerry Brown's skin color. But she's obviously doing so as a way to further stir up the pot and further divide certain communities. For what other reason would she include such an unnecessary stat about one particular race, then proceed to contrast it with the big, bad "white liberal" who wants to "sabotage" the vote?

The only stat that matters in terms of Jerry Brown's Prop 8 stance is the legality of Prop 8 itself. By turning to issues of race, Maggie is showing how scared her side is that they are going to lose this thing (and then look REALLY foolish for wasting millions of their supporters' dollars on a fight that was never legal to begin with). But beyond that, she is also demonstrating the sort of ugly tricks that have defined the pro-Prop 8 side since the very beginning. It's not about the merits for them: It's about getting their way no matter the cost. And if that means dividing society, then so be it. They've been doing it for so long, they've become comfortable with the polarization.

To quote Maggie herself: "It's appalling but unsurprising.

**Oh, and anti-gay side: Please refrain from using "night before Christmas" parodies in your nasty press releases. You already ruined our California wedding plans -- please leave us our pleasant childhood memories!!

Your thoughts

Guess what Maggie, 7 million Californians and the majority of the African American community who voted for prop 8 can be wrong. Getting the constitutional amendment passed does not make it ethically or morally or rationally acceptable law.

Ugh. Does anyone know how Anne Coulter's jaw was broken? I want to sic that guy on Maggie.

Is Maggie sending a message with that half open mouth in her thumbnail photo??

Grrr!

Those lying liars have been race-baiting since the election sparked so many protests. You would think that by now they would realize that it doesn't benefit them, especially since that 70% number that they keep spouting has been widely reported to be incorrect. The actual number is much more like 59% at most. They want the LGBT community to be at odds with African American community. But, not only is it not working, the fact of the matter is that there is no reason why we should be at odds. And as you say, we every reason why we need to strengthen bonds with all of California's minority groups.

We need to keep reiterating the fact that the passage of Prop 8 doesn't just affect same-sex marriage. If allowed to stand, this amendment signals to all of the lying liar bigots that EVERY unpopular minority in California is fair game. That's the very heart of Jerry Brown's argument which emphatically states that eliminating equal protection for one suspect class effectively eliminates that protection for all suspect classes.

Actually, the gay community and the Proposition 8 protestors have already made it quite clear how they feel about black people.

And next to this:

"If allowed to stand, this amendment signals to all of the lying liar bigots that EVERY unpopular minority in California is fair game."

Blacks are not an unpopular minority in California. Only among gay and lesbian liberals are black people unpopular.

Please, NDT: Give me the Xmas gift of not hijacking my threads with your unique take on gays. For at least a day or two.

Maggie Gallagher weighs as much as 7 million Californians. Has she been eating Rick Warrens donuts?

and North Dallas Thirty: Nice link. It's over a month old which is ancient in this day and age. Things have changed since November 10. You haven't. Black people are NOT unpopular among gay and lesbian liberals. You probably are though. Maybe you and Maggie Gallagher can eat some mistletoe.

"Things have changed since November 10."

Yup; more black people have figured out that gay and lesbian liberals only like black people as long as black people do exactly what gay and lesbian liberals tell them to do -- and that, if they don't, gay and lesbian liberals will start screaming "n*****" at them, verbally abusing them, and threatening them.

They finally saw what the "love and equality" that you claim you support involves, just as gay conservatives and Republicans have known for years that the gay left's "love and equality" involves telling them to commit suicide and hoping that their children die of SIDS.

Oh, and Jeremy; you will get for what you ask. Tomorrow.

By the way, John Ozed, just to make sure everyone understands; mistletoe is a poisonous plant, so what you're telling me to do is to hurt myself and commit suicide.

This is by no means the first time that that's happened ( http://www.indegayforum.org/blog/show/31169.html#7041 , for one charming example), but I suppose you should get credit for being one of the more subtle ones.

Oh, and by the way, just in case you're interested, it doesn't really look good for gays to be bashing others for "hate speech" while they're telling other gays who disagree with them that they should commit suicide.

Happy Crimble Jeremy! ALL the best wishes for the new year too!

love,
John Ozed
