'Pro-family' scandal: You can't make it up (nor would you want to)

by Jeremy Hooper

When working on the pro-gay side of the "culture war," your imagination can sometimes get the best of you. Dealing day in and day out with people who vehemently lash out against your "lifestyle" is an understandably annoying undertaking, so it's easy to let your mind create sensational ideas about your opposition's reasons for being so vocal on this issue. You wonder to yourself, "Is so and so secretly gay?" You find yourself asking, "Is there some deep, dark scandal brewing underneath a certain organization?" Then the next thing you know, you've allowed yourself to concoct this crazy fantasy world where closeted pastors, sex workers, crystal meth, claims of non-consensual intercourse, and large sums of church hush money are all involved. At these times you have to be careful about letting the fiction get out of hand.

But then there other times, when you are more spot-on than you could've ever imagined:

***UPDATE: Original Haggard whistleblower Mike Jones has a thing or two to say about this latest:

Your thoughts

Even as a Christian I get fed up with the limits some churches try and push. They use their status as a church to conceal things that are decidedly NOT appropriate. They give religious people a bad name.

As a side not, why exactly did Mike Jones get treated this way? I'm confused, I admittedly didn't keep up with all the details of this case, so could someone let me know why Mike Jones has been treated in such a bad manner, or if what he says is true, did gay groups really ignore him?

I saw that yesterday, how funny! But I wasn't aware that the 18 year old was saying that his sexual liaison with Haggard wasn't consensual. What a scandal indeed! And the church has the gall to say, "Oh, yea, we gave him a shit-pile of money, but it wasn't hush money. No.. no.. we were just helping him (wink wink).. yea helping him out!"

Haggard's closeted weenie got him is some deep doo-doo, didn't it? And, this comes just as HBO halfway lionizes him as some sort of victim in an upcoming "documentary". There are some days when the stars and planets begin to align, and everything seems right with the universe! But if you're Haggard, those days are few and far between!

And, the moral of this story, boys and girls: if you make your living off of the generosity of gentlemen callers... you might end up shooting yourself in the privates if you publicly disgrace one of them. Just sayin...

"...in some deep doo-doo..." is what I meant. My giddy fingers are tingling sooooooo much that I can't even type!

Oy, you just know they're going to use this to push their gays=pedophiles/gays=predators angle.

Unfortunately you're right, Mr. Phoenix.
At least we can take solace in that this does squat for their 'jesus=gay cure' angle.
Always gotta look at thr bright side. 83

New Life Church should just drop the "f" from their logo and sign.
Hush money - where can I apply?
I sure could use some financial assistance too.

If they use this to push gays=pedophiles & predators angle, its just too easy to say lately its equaled priests and mega-church pastors.

This all seems to be oddly convenient publicity. Just when no one gave a damn about Ted Haggard anymore, maybe HBO needed a big steaming pile of fresh scandal to peak curiosity again.
