Matt Barber: The conservative movement's liability-in-waiting
Hey, social conservatives: Want to completely destroy the remaining sway that your movement holds within American politics? Well then by all means, you should start following your side's most unhinged, voice to emerge in the Bush era: Unabashed gay bully Matt Barber. For his hyperbolic, jugular-ripping, "newfangled"-laden takes on the so-called "culture war" are representative of everything that is wrong about your side's oversimplified "gays are evil!" rhetoric, and his increased public presence will only guarantee the LGBT equality movement's continued success.
Latest albatross in point: The onetime Concerned Woman spokesman, current Liberty Counsel something-or-other has penned a new piece for the extremist American Family Association wherein he asserts his interpretation of cherry-picked Christian scripture as the only acceptable version, backs the ridiculous idea that "ex-gay" is a valid sexual orientation, likens homosexuality to things like incest and bestiality, and comes to the almost unbelievably brazen and simplistic conclusion that "[e]ither homosexual behavior is sexual immorality or there is simply no such thing as sexual immorality -- period." Go read it if you must:
Within minutes after swearing in, President Obama had the White House website updated to declare his unconditional support for every demand of the politically powerful and very well-funded homosexual lobby (a.k.a., "Big Homo").

Your thoughts
Interesting that he uses the phrase "a la carte Christianity". That phrase is a valid label for every sect within christianity, that's what makes each different. Duh.

Well you can just bet that any comments we try to make on that website won't post. Same-old, same old. Cherry picking scripture; the narrow assumption that the everyone in the US is Xtian and that your morality and my morality are the same. He has no understanding of personal freedom. This new-wave fascism is so tiresome.

Gah, these people make me sick! They say that pride is the biggest sin, yet they claim to have the ONLY interpretation of the Bible and everyone else is wrong and going to hell. How is that not pride?

I think Matt is eating his feelings. Speaking of food, I think a lot of sin will be happening this February 14, when those celebrating Valentine's day dine on some tasty shellfish. What say you Matt?

Yeah, I read this...it was pretty painful. And not only is Matt's column hideously offensive to GLBT people and allies, it's also an affront to millions of people of faith. He makes ridiculous statements about how the Bible is either completely inerrant or completely bogus...but there are millions of Christians and Christian theologians (myself included) who believe that the Bible is a tool through which God reveals Godself to us, but who also recognize the need to understand the historical/cultural context and interpret accordingly.
Barber makes inaccurate generalizations, indulges in childish name-calling ("Big Homo"? Really? What are you, 8?), and displays a thoroughly unChristlike attitude throughout the piece. To all the non-Christians out there, and to all the GLBT individuals (Christian or not), let me assure you: this man does not speak for us.

Are those man-boobs? Matty, it may be time to consider wearing a bra! Don't want those things sagging down to your knees!

There's nothing as dangerous to both sides as a fundie closet case.
