It's a nice day for a White (House) wedding (acclamation)
As more and more courts, lawmakers, and everyday folk wise up to LGBT equality and the inadequacy of civil unions, statements like this one go from "annoying but politically understandable" to merely the former:
"The President respects the decision of the Iowa Supreme Court, and continues to believe that states should make their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage. Although President Obama supports civil unions rather than same-sex marriage, he believes that committed gay and lesbian couples should receive protection under the law."
White House Responds To Iowa [Advocate]
Seriously, what will provide enough political cover for an unabashed "CONGRATULATIONS, GAYS!"? Three more states? A state that exists below the Mason-Dixon Line? A court mandate that the ruling is not allowed to affect future presidential elections? What?!
Look, we're still proudly afflicted with Obamatitis. But when happy days like this are met with tepid, at best, statements, we can't help but feel that Team O needs a little more help with expanding the "we" part of his ubiquitous campaign slogan.
**UPDATE: We got an email from Kerry Eleveld, saying the White House contacted her with a corrected statement that includes the words "equal rights" instead of "protection. Pam's all over this one:
Breaking: White House 'response' to Iowa ruling [PHB]
Your thoughts
The White House has made a corrected statement:
"The President respects the decision of the Iowa Supreme Court, and continues to believe that states should make their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage. Although President Obama supports civil unions rather than same-sex marriage, he believes that committed gay and lesbian couples should receive equal rights under the law."
As much as I hate to push conspiracy theories, I have to ask is there someone in the White House undermining Obama on gay issues. It seems that some of these missteps are just too damned stupid to be accidental.

Whoops - you already put that there. There was an earlier statement put out that didn't have words "equal rights" in it.

Never mind. I think my medication is affecting my mind.

So he supports cognitive dissonance? That's not equal rights. Nothing less than full marriage in all 50 states is equal rights.

You guys must not be fooled: The Whtie House isn't remotely interested in Gay Marriage!

At least it's an improvement over what we used to have. Still bloody infuriating though.

If Obama acts happy about the ruling, than that'll make it seem as if he supports gay marriage and then he won't get re-elected in 2012 because it's near impossible to get elected if you support gay marriage.

Oh goodie. Wayne's back.
Yes Wayne, this White House *is* interested in LGBT rights, including marriage. It's unfortunate biases, like the ones who have expressed on this site many times before, that prevent principled politicians from being free to speak their hearts.
But that is changing. By 2012, it may be that NOT supporting what is right, fair, and equal will be the Democratic liability.

Well, whether they are being-half assed or really interested in gay marriage, they are making their own bed with statements like this. Because, if 2 guys get married in Iowa -- a STATE where it is legal -- and one of those people is from another country -- how then does the Federal Government provide "equal protection" for VISA applications? The ONLY way is Federal recognition of same sex marriage. Period.

Obama won't come out and give us actual support because that would be the end of his kissy-face relationship with all his RRRW friends. He values them so much more than he does us which is why he gives us occasional tepid lip service and them the red carpet.

Obama has a few things on his plate, and he doesn't want to piss off the powerful fundies. I'm not sure what country you all are from, but that's politics. And getting self righteous fanatical over marraige is not doing us or the country any good. By going after marraige in the hick States, you could fuel a backlash against the dems. And you could seriously annoy the tons of moderates who support domestic partnership. I just hope the superiority high is worth it.

"I'm not sure what country you all are from, but that's politics."
...
"I just hope the superiority high is worth it."
Wilberforce: There's no reason to talk down to anyone. Most everyone in this site is familiar with the realities of America and its political system. But we're also familiar with the realities of constitutional fairness, know that our president is a scholar of constitutional law, and realize that his civil unions-only messaging is becoming ever-more irreconcilable.

Also sent this to your AIM, not sure which you'll check first.
No idea if you've seen this or not, but please look at this as it's a gross display of homophobia:

I figured since you're very vocal in the LGBT community you wouldn't mind posting this: it's about a lesbian nursing who was kicked out of school simply because of her orientation.
