NY GOP: Vote your heart, not scripted part

by Jeremy Hooper

Xephyr Rich Dzone Hoozoo Images Jiminy2-1In news that bodes well for New York marriage equality bill, the state's local Republican leadership is apparently going to allow its peeps to vote their consciences rather than share a brain:

The Log Cabin Republicans announced Tuesday that the GOP's New York leadership in both the state senate and assembly are going to allow Republican legislators to make "conscience votes" on Gov. David Paterson's marriage-equality bill rather than pressuring party members to vote against it, giving the legislation a much stronger likelihood of picking up Republican votes in both chambers.

Not to be confused with other states' far-right Republican leadership, who insist their legislators vote that "science" is a "con." Here in the New York GOP, it's the conscience that now seems to be king.

It's unclear if the GOP will also insist on a "conscious vote." But in case not, we've already taught Sen. Tom Duane a way to quickly put people under, and set him up with ventriloquist classes that will allow him to throw his "Aye"-declaring voice to dazed Republicans chairs. Because our conscience tells us that it's high time to pass this overdue thing, no matter the lobbying, reasoned arguments, or sleeper holds that it takes to get there.
