Pride Agenda responds to deceptive NOM ad campaign

Statement by Empire State Pride Agenda Executive Director Alan Van Capelle

May 28, 2009

“Today the National Organization for Marriage—a New Jersey-based group—released an ad in New York containing many of the same false messages that we’ve seen in anti-marriage equality campaigns across the country.

One of their most deceiving claims is that children will be forced to learn about marriage in schools. This is absolutely untrue—and education officials in Albany have already stated that teaching about marriage of any kind is not mandated by any New York State curriculum. These ads are dishonest and are simply meant to scare people.

So far the debate on marriage equality in New York State has been respectful and honest. Unfortunately, we knew that forces from out of the state would launch misinformation campaigns that seek to cloud the honest policy debate that is happening right now in New York. That’s why we released a
resource earlier in the year to make sure that New Yorkers had the facts on some of the most common myths that the opposition likes to use to mislead the public about marriage for same-sex couples. Unlike the specious allegations made in this ad, our responses to these myths are backed up with research and third-party validation.

It’s time to stop the fear-mongering. On this issue of vital importance for tens of thousands of New York families, let’s stick to the facts. New Yorkers are street smart—and we know a snake oil salesman when we see one.”

Suddenly I'm kind of glad I can never find a decent country music station or get any radio reception at all in my office! Thanks!
