Is even NOM aware of Prejean's dwindling 15 minutes?
So this is weird. For some reason, NOM felt the need to issue this clarification:
“A number of media sources have described Carrie Prejean as a spokesperson for the National Organization for Marriage.
As we made clear at our press conference yesterday: Carrie appeared with NOM as a private citizen; she does not work for the National Organization for Marriage. She is a spokesperson for her own views, as anyone watching her can tell.
We are grateful to Carrie Prejean for her willingness to stand up for marriage. We would love to work with Carrie in the future if she chooses, and we wish her well in all her future endeavors whatever she chooses. We're proud of her. Americans are proud of her. She is a remarkable young woman. Thank you, Carrie. "
NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MARRIAGE: CLARIFICATION ON CARRIE PREJEAN [NOM]
(H/t: Towle)
Kind of odd, dontcha think? I mean, it's not like most people on either side really care if Carrie is officially or unofficially involved with this organization. What matters is that she's doing what she's doing and saying what she's saying -- whether you're for or against it.
So why does NOM feel the need to distance themselves via a press release? Is it the breast implant story? Is there other stuff that's yet to come out? Have they finally realized the utter ridiculousness of using a young, possibly not so savvy beauty pageant contestant as a political hole-ace? Or is simply that NOM is boring of the Prejean story as much as all of America is?
We're only like 3% interested at this point, so we may or may not keep you posted if we find out more.
**UPDATE, 5/5: Could this have something to do with it?!
Your thoughts
Maggie just doesn't want to cut her in on the hate pie. Big money in the hate, ya know.

She's trying to keep her crown by having her people get NOM to distance themselves. She's read the press releases from the Miss USA/Miss CA org and knows what time it is: get back on board with what you're being paid to do or hand over the sash and crown. Pretty simple.

That was actually a thought I had, Sammy. I'm wondering if Prejean wants money.
I can't imagine that NOM has much loot, really. I mean, they keep asking for donations, but have no clearly defined purpose. For ballot initiatives and established groups that do lots of other things (like FOF), "pro-fam" people are willing to open their pockets. But I don't think many people are opening their pockets in this shitty economy to fund this joke of an organization.

I think they're protecting her at all costs, because their own image after "Gathering Storm" and a string of sharp political defeats have them looking like last year's Detroit Lions all of a sudden.

Maybe, ZnSD. But to me, that seems less likely. Honestly, considering that she's hired a high profile evangelical publicity person and seems to be courting the far-right circuit, I almost think she WANTS to lose her crown. Then she can really work the "I traded truth for the tiara" nonsense.

I'm thinking Carrie asked them to do this. She's in danger of losing her Miss California crown if she keeps this up.

Good point J. But I wonder: given the current changing views on marriage equality and lgbt folks in general she may not believe that there's a lot of cash to be had for going the Anita route. There is however always cash in being a beauty queen with some connections that may serve her later on. I think she's just trying to maximize her potential while maintaining the veneer of upholding the Miss CA title. But hey, you know what they say about opinions! ;)

"I almost think she WANTS to lose her crown."
You could be right, JH. When I first read it, I developed the same conclusion that ZnSD posed, but that "martyrdom" angle could be quite lucrative for the beauty queen runner-up (loser). I mean, no one would have known jack shit about Palin from her losing stint as a BQ runner-up. But, as a mouthpiece (monger) for the radical religious right's agenda... Is there an minimum age for running for Governor of California?

Heavy is the air head that wears the crown of Miss California.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's an issue of following the $$$...
Does Miss California want $$$ for an official association with NOM???
Either that, or maybe even NOM is recognizing that tying themselves to Prejean would be a joke. Mario bashed her abusively in his blogger videos. NOM has tried to capitalize on portraying her as a victim.
But it's ONE GUY bashing her.
HRC, GLAAD, GLSEN??? REAL fighters for gay rights!
Have they insulted her?
I don't think so.
After a while, maybe even NOM can realize that trying to exaggerate one fat blogger's abuse onto a general population just emphasizes how lame their approach is...

Maybe Carrie does have some sense in that pea-brain of hers, and figured Maggie and NOM are using her to fill their own wallets.

Poor Anderson Cooper's Pageant research gopher was on tonight with the boob story...and if Anderson said once he said 3 times. I don't see what the big deal is. The 'researcher' did say that the Miss California crew stated she was coming back to 'do her job.'... He says...
and what is that? He's beet red by the end. Hoot!

I'm wondering if the fake, nearly-naked, Prejean boobies in the Bliss Magazine centerfold have resulted in face-egg for NOM? Maybe they don't want to hitch their wagon to a (slut) Beauty Queen??
