With steam mostly blown, we now look towards future
Alright, we've hemmed and hawed enough about Gov Lynch's unnecessary "religious protections" and the failure of yesterday's House vote. Now it's time to move on and consider how we can right this wrong within the next two weeks.
First up: An interesting assessment of yesterday's vote -- who flipped, who flopped, who failed to show, and which variable had the most effect (no show Dems, largely):
Today's Vote [Blue Hampshire]
Next up: Another Blue Hampshire link, this one a sort of manifesto for moving forward:
Tireless activists and advocates of marriage equality here in New Hampshire and out-of-state, have the courage not to make the perfect the enemy of the good.
A Little Courage [BH]
And finally: A link to yesterday's roll call vote, so you can find the "nays" and the no votes and contact them with a strong, measured call for their support the next go-around:
HB73 -- 5/20/09 [NH Roll Call]
We're still unhappy with the call for stronger religious language, and will continue to comment on the same. But it is time to protect NH families and get thing thing passed! After all, the best way we can prove that we never needed the heightened language is to get equality and then completely ignore those groups who positioned us as a church-focused missile! [::sigh::] An activist can dream.
Your thoughts
I think the major obstacle remains the House. The votes have always been close, and at the whim of how many are in attendance, capricious partisan politics, and exasperatingly chronic revoting. Lynch is another obstacle, but I feel if the language of the bill reflects something very similar to what CT and VT have, he may have no choice but to keep his word. It's really up to this committee to get the House members on board, and it's a done deal.
