Diaz to Duane: Give me your lunch money Show me your names
New York State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. (D-Bronx) continues to thoroughly class up the state's marriage debate. In a new third grade-channeling press release, Diaz says of fellow State Senator Tom Duane (D-Manhattan):
"If Senator Tom Duane has the necessary Senate votes to pass the homosexual marriage bill in New York State, then he should release the names of those Senators who are supporting the bill. If not, he should shut up. If any member of the State Senate is so ashamed to have their names released or to release their own names for this or for any pending legislation, then they clearly feel ashamed of their position."
...
"It is a disgrace that Senator Duane is playing this mind game with his colleagues and with the public. If Senator Duane has the votes, he should release the names. If not, then he should be ashamed of himself.”
Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz to Senator Tom Duane: Release the Names or Shut Up [Diaz]
Sen. Duane should either provide a full list, pre-vote, of all the senators who he predicts will vote a certain way? And if he doesn't, he should "shut up" about his legislation? Where'd Sen. Diaz learn this senatorial policy: The 1950s Bronx sandlot, when his friends Spanky and Tommy invoked the patented "Oh, baloney! Then show me your hickey, wiseguy" clause to force lil' Jimmy Miller into proving whether or not he really kissed Jenny Wooten? Because honestly, this "put up or shut up" threat sounds much more appropriate for a playground than it does the floor of the New York Senate, with "growing up" being the true action that one certain state senator needs to take to heart!
It remains to be seen if Duane will reveal any names to Diaz (hint: he more surely won't). But knowing Sen. Duane as we do, we can flat-out tell you that his "shutting up" is about as likely of a prospect as a future without with marriage equality.
