A small gift for Family Day. But a cute and thoughtful one, nonetheless
Today is Family Day. And in his proclamation addressing the occasion, President Obama has made sure to mention our families:
FAMILY DAY, 2009
-------
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
Our family provides one of the strongest influences on our lives. American families from every walk of life have taught us time and again that children raised in loving, caring homes have the ability to reject negative behaviors and reach their highest potential. Whether children are raised by two parents, a single parent, grandparents, a same-sex couple, or a guardian, families encourage us to do our best and enable us to accomplish great things. Today, our children are confronting issues of drug and alcohol use with astonishing regularity. On Family Day, we honor the dedication of parents, commend the achievements of their children, and celebrate the contributions our Nation's families have made to combat substance abuse among young people.
Now, of course all of the other labels would have been sufficient, since LGBT people are parents, grandparents, guardians, etc. But if you want to make a statement of support for a community that still, unfortunately, needs statements of support, then this is really the only way to do it.
Are we still waiting for our advocacy bulldog? Yup. But this bone is something to chew on in the interim.

Your thoughts
If he devoted half the effort to actually doing something as he devotes to token gestures like this we would already have full equality.

Yea, I hear ya PS. But these sorts of proclamations do have to happen, independent of whatever else happens in the LGBT rights arena. So I try to not be so cynical about these kinds of statements, or to pit them against the inadequate work in other area.

This proclamation does hurt with the same "but equal" status of a court appointed guardian. . .A bone that my family appreciates, but is still insulted by nonetheless.
