The Vatican and your 'I dos': How Canon Law is putting a cannon to your equality

by Jeremy Hooper

In Maine, the Catholics are coming out in a major way against marriage equality. In New York, Archbishop Timothy Dolan is telling the press all about the "character flaw" that is homosexuality. And we've recently learned that the church's influence was even more of a factor in the Prop 8 fight then many of us realized at the time. Everywhere we look these days, we're seeing marriage opponents mobilizing en masse, in Mass.

Now via this recent report in the Times of Trenton, we learn that the thoroughly Catholic-tied National Organization For Marriage is drumming NOMup the same sort of holy hostility in the Garden State:

In anticipation of a possible vote on the issue by state legislators sometime after the November election, Catholic bishops in New Jersey have begun a campaign against same-sex marriage, issuing a 2,300-word letter opposing the redefinition of marriage to include same-sex couples. Clergy and others in the movement have urged parishioners to contact legislators asking them to oppose same-sex marriage.

"A same-sex relationship is not the same as marriage. Marriage is rooted in sexual union, and sex union requires sexual difference," said Damon Owens, 43, the New Jersey coordinator for the National Organization for Marriage.

He recently spoke to a crowd of about 40 parishioners at St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church. Owens said there is line between accepting people, which is always a virtue, and tolerating something "that's not true." He added that same sex marriage "is in conflict with reality."

You better believe it: There is a major Catholic push against your equality that is starting to make the Mormon's 2008 efforts look like child's play by comparison. And we mean "you better believe it" quite literally, because that is exactly what these Catholic leaders are telling their friends, fellows, and congregants when it comes to their faith-based views on gays' civil equality!

These folks are deliberately pitting gay people, their families, and their allies against their network of multi-millions (of dollars and people). All in the name of God. The first step is for us to realize how powerful and concerted the effort truly is. The next step is take a stand. Are you ready to give a damn?

**SEE ALSO: Box Turtle Bulletin has done digging on Damon Owens' own church affiliations:

And we also find that Damon Owens is a devotee of the spirituality of St. Josemaria, better known as the Opus Dei. A secretive Catholic organization mostly unknown before being dramatized as the fictional villains of The Da Vinci Code, the Opus Dei is a group that believes in the sanctity of good works (perhaps best defined by the advancement of Roman Catholic doctrine). The Opus Dei is also known for the far-right political associations of its members.
Who is Damon Owens? [BTB]

Your thoughts

"Marriage is rooted in sexual union..."

Funny, I thought it was rooted in legal protection of all couples, regardless of their procreative ability or desire.

"...and sex [sic] union requires sexual difference."

They obviously haven't thought too hard about that one. For one, sexual union obviously does *not* require sexual "difference," 'cause the sex is great. Furthermore, this is an almost embarrassing view of marriage. They obviously seem to be disregarding the fact that marriage is about love, family, commitment, and legal protection of couples, not about senseless, animalistic ƒüçk!ng.

Not any different here in the UK.

Every equal rights advance made was visciously opposed by the Catholic church and indeed, they are still trying to chip away at those rights we have gained and all controlled
from the Vatican by ex Hitler Youth member Ratzinburg.

I suggest that every Catholic who supports marriage equality leaves the RCC, or at least stop giving them money.

Oh don't you love having people who follow a Hitler Youth preach morality at you?

The Catholic bishops are CAMPAIGNING??? Yank their tax exempt status!!! In fact pull it from the Catholic church across the US and any other religious tax exempt organization that gets involved in civil issues. Imagine what the influx of tax revenue could do to all these states that are struggling, shifting the wealth from the rich to the poor.

They really love to FORGET that little detail about Papa Ratface, penguinsaur. Fortunately we never will.
I could also add that I really don't need to hear a bunch of celibates, frustrated closet cases, pedophiles, and their protectors, telling ME how to manage my sex life.

Well here is what the defrocked Catholic Priest from FRESNO, who had the gall to come out against Prop H8... is doing "Geoffrey Farrow, a Roman Catholic priest who was suspended from the ministry last year for opposing Proposition 8 in defiance of the church’s official stand, is one of the nine people who signed up to be official proponents of the Love Honor Cherish initiative' from the story on 365 Gays news.

How convienent the Catholic church forgets the bishop who is on the run in Cananda. The Catholic church has no moral compass, no scruples. Is only concerned with money and power. Has proven over and over in history what a reprehensible two faced monster that has no idea of what Jesus would do. So who are they to tell me who I can or can not marry?
