How to unite Obama critics and supporters alike: Show how much the far-right hopes to decimate our freedoms

by Jeremy Hooper

LaBabsWhile we were marching on Washington, assessing the details of Pres. Obama's HRC speech, and discussing the various approaches that we as a people think we can best use in order to come together in support of LGBT rights, longtime 'mo foe Peter LaBarbera was thinking of new and unique ways to disparage all LGBT people for even thinking that we deserve such peace and equality. Here are some of the lowest of his lowlights:

"Obama can no more declare with any authority that abnormal, homosexuality-based relationships are as 'admirable' as normal relationships than he can proclaim that each day will now have 30 hours instead of 24 to increase American productivity."
...
"Homosexual relationships are not to be admired, they are to be pitied, as immoral “unions” that can only pretend to copy real marriage."
...
"the more he panders and postures to his impatient homosexual allies, the more Obama’s supposed embrace of husband-and-wife marriage becomes a farce — one apparently designed to fool voters who knew next to nothing about his real, radically pro-homosexual and pro-transsexual agenda."
...
"The truth, of course, is that homosexuality-based relationships are anything but equal to the real thing: they cannot produce children; they are based on destructive and changeable behavior that has been condemned by Christianity and other major religious throughout most of civilized human history; and in celebrating their particular sin and attaching it to the noble institution of marriage, they force the teaching of homosexuality and counterfeit 'marriage' as normative to schoolchildren in the name of tolerance and equality."
...
"We hope that Obama’s cynical habit of talking out of both sides of his mouth on the homosexual issue (like other issues) will be his undoing. Now it is time for moral-minded Americans — especially those who voted for Obama — be they Christian, Muslim or Jew; black, white or brown — to let the White House and Congress know that they will oppose all of the Obama Administration’s legislative efforts to create a bogus “civil right” out of the human wrong of homosexuality."

It makes you wonder what goes through Pete's head. Does he really think for a second that any person of power will ever get behind rhetoric like his? Heck, we can't even imagine Huck-an-LGBT or Mooseburgers would publicly support this kind of thing, especially after the 3.5-7.5 years of progress that will have to take place before any far-right person could ever be president. But here's Pete, comparing the mere idea that our bonds and existences are even "normal" to the impossibility that days can be altered to fit into a 30 hour timeframe. Does he seriously have visions of an America that sees him as increasingly mainstream rather than exponentially fringe?! And if he truly does, how far will he and his pals go to take America to that frightening day?

As we all look at this new momentum that our movement has harnessed, it is time that we rise up and demand that the conservatives in this country answer for this all-out assault that so many of them still hope to wage against LGBT people's CIVIL liberties. If it is social conservatism that leads Democratic leadership to feet-drag on our issues, then we must expose the incendiary fuel that fires that faction. And if the Republican party at large is not willing to disavow this kind of language (which is more common than some realize), then we will unabashedly use their complacency against them. The days of being told that we are a "human wrong" must end and they must end now. Whether you consider yourself an "A-gay," a "Stonewall 2.0 rager," or even a "traditional marriage supporter," surely you can agree on that one point.

Your thoughts

It strikes me that 'mo foe Pete doth protest too much - sounds to me like there is a closet he is contending with and like those most closeted Condemn and say Hell and Damnation to those of us who are not closeted and ARE God's sons and daughters. These things sure piss him off, don't they?

Sorry - one more thought as I looked back at your posting, Jeremy - does that Cheshire cat grin that seems to be 'mo foe Pete's trademark give him the right to decide who IS and who is NOT a normal couple? Is so, the Christians should be flocking to him - Praise Jesus - our Savior has returned! Yeah, right!

This is hilarious! He has finally stepped off of the cliff of wingnut lunacy. Finally!

I honestly can't write anything more....

Peter says: "The truth, of course, is that homosexuality-based relationships are anything but equal to the real thing:"

Joe replies: I agree Peter, except I have never met anyone with a successful relationship based on heterosexuality or homosexuality. I know my relationship of 10 years is based on LOVE, not sexuality.

LaBarbera 'stepped off the cliff of wingnut lunacy' years ago.

Does he realize how hateful his words sound? I wouldn't put it past him to approach an open, elderly gay or lesbian couple who have been together for 30+ years on the street and tell them their relationship is to be pitied. What's pitiable is seeing a heterosexual man go undercover at gay events (fringe and mainstream alike), report back to the public, create a website dedicated to anti-gay propaganda and call it Americans for Truth of Homosexuality.

Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were the first lesbian couple to be married in California prior to Prop 8. They'd been together since 1953 until Martin's death last year. Who in his right mind could pity their relationship???

No Pete, what's to be pitied is a life wasted on spewing nothing but hate and viscious LIES about people you don't even know. THAT is to be pitied.

Anyone, ANYONE who pushes the "gays can change" card around like they have any idea what they're talking about doesn't even have a leg to stand on. This man has no concept of anything LGBT, like, he literally must not know one gay person. I just can't imagine being so hurtful, telling someone they aren't the same, they aren't equal. It seems so selfish, which is exactly how I would label Pete. Selfish. And insecure. Any person who spends THIS MUCH TIME studying, analyzing, talking about and lying about another person's sex habits (because, let's all be honest, Pete never EVER talks about anything but gay SEX.) has some serious personal mental issues.

I love that he uses CHristianity like a standard - like, well because Christians have always condemned the gays, that OBVIOUSLY means they SHOULD be condemned. Just like black people. And people from other countries. And Jews. And pork and ham. And women who have their periods.

I can't. I just can't. I don't understand how a movement with a mouthpiece like this piece of psychotic trash actually has a stronghold on American politics and beliefs.

The only thing I can say is it's crazy men like this that really help bolster the reality of the situation - gays are normal and Christians who focus on gay sex 24 hours a day seven days a week are not.
