Focus on other issues, says group that's 100% focused on making our equality an 'issue'

by Jeremy Hooper

This is a New Jersey-centric web ad that NOM is currently running:

So here we have a group whose sole focus -- WHOSE SOLE FOCUS! -- is on turning our civil equality into a "real problem," telling folks that the New Jersey state legislator shouldn't take up this matter of civil rights because there are other pots on the fire. The nerve of them!

The truth is that the New Jersey state legislature, like every lawmaking body in the nation, is quite capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time. The "real problem" here: That Maggie Gallagher and company are incapable of existing amongst their LGBT neighbors without balking and playing dumb at the same time! That problem may not take priority over a failing economy or healthcare system. But in this marketplace of ideas that we call existence, it's more than imperative that we take stock of the intellectual crash that that NOM has turned into a mission statement. And now is as good of a time as any to do so!

**Here's the stock photo source, for those who like that sort of thing.

Your thoughts

From the section entitled "Don't You Have More Important Issues To Think About?" from "Derailing for Dummies," the quintessential how-to on using privilege to demean the opinions of oppressed groups:

"When you're beginning to feel backed into a corner, you could do worse than to trot this one out.

"As with the best of all these techniques, this step operates on several levels. First of all, it communicates to the Marginalised Person™ that you think the entire debate is trivial and below consideration, indicating you entirely disregard their feelings and emotions. Secondly, you disown responsibility for your part in the debate and anything that you've said that may have been discriminatory or offensive.

"Finally, you reinforce your Privilege® by suggesting that it is Privileged People's® job to set the agenda for the Marginalised Group™. After all, how could they possibly know what issues they should prioritise for themselves, they're far too inferior and stupid! You, with your objective, ractional Privileged® perspective, on the other hand, know exactly what is most important and it is definitely not confronting you with your own bigotry and ignorance!"

This is now the third time (at least) that the Gagger has publicly proclaimed that the issue of marriage equality is (relatively) unimportant. She says that over and over again. In this case, it is pretty transparently a political ploy, to dupe the public, and hopefully fire up the minions.

But, the fact that she is claiming on one day that marriage equality will destroy the universe, then the next day is claiming that it is entirely unimportant, and should be ignored, should be proof enough to the public that she is just playing them. Playing them to achieve her financial goals, which are entirely contingent on pursuing her political agenda.

To the hordes who need no justification for their supremacist hatred, nothing that she says matters at all. Except that they might make a phone call, or something. But to that (relatively ubiquitous) 20% who are in the "movable" middle, the motivation of the lying liars should be important. If this public discussion is important, then there should never be any discussion of it being unimportant.

So, what is it Maggie? Is it important enough to be discussed, or is it just a political game to you? A game for which you are lavishly compensated! Or do you just derive some perverse pleasure from the exercising of your hatred of relatively powerless political minorities? Which is especially evident in the fact that you consider us to be unimportant!
