Matt Barber: The diarrhea-mouth-afflicted man who's winning us this 'culture war'

by Jeremy Hooper

We've repeatedly referred to Matt Barber as the anti-gay movement's biggest liability. That's because his work, whether it be with his former bosses at CWA, his current work with Liberty Counsel, or his own independent writing for outlets like Townhall, has been among the most ridiculously hyperbolic, frighteningly targeted, and personally hostile of all of the "pro-family" personalities. He doesn't just engage in this so-called "culture war" -- It's obvious that Matt, who prides himself on being a boxer, aims to wound.

Well it looks like the over-the-top aggression might finally be biting him in the ass. Here's the deal: Last week, fellow 'mo foe Peter LaBarbera posted an article wherein he quoted Matt (who serves on the board of Peter's Americans For Truth group) as saying that gay partnerships involve “one man violently cramming his penis into another man’s lower intestine and calling it ‘love.’” An extremely crude depiction, for sure. One that prompted professional "ex-gay" Randy Thomas to do as he's done before and come out against Peter and Matt's over-the-top brand of "activism." Randy's post then caught larger attention, prompting Matt's bosses at Liberty Counsel to come out and basically call Peter a liar, saying that "Neither Matt Barber nor anyone with Liberty Counsel wrote or made any such public statement that is being alleged [by Peter]." A public rebuking which then led the scorned Pete to get all kinds of "oh no you di'n't" up on Randy Thomas and Liberty, leading him to today post the following:

..[T]hanks to the politically correct overreaction of Randy Thomas and Alan Chambers of Exodus International (an ex-”gay” umbrella group), Liberty Counsel (Barber’s current employer) issued an apologetic statement that was not fully accurate in that it left out a key fact: Matt’s ownership of the bold sodomy description. This could create the impression that Barber might not have made the comment, which he did.

Today Matt issued his own clarification (emphasis added):

This is for clarification only. As affirmed in Liberty Counsel’s statement, neither I nor anyone with Liberty Counsel ever publicly ‘wrote or made’ the comment in question – an unapologetically direct and accurate depiction of the sin of sodomy (a sin that God directly and accurately calls both an ‘abomination’ and ‘detestable’). Some years before I began working with Liberty Counsel, I made the comment in private conversation with Peter LaBarbera. At the time, Peter asked if he could ‘quote me on it’ and I said yes."

So basically, Peter and Matt are letting us all know that what they say about us in private is even worse than what they say about us publicly! What kind of strategy is this?!?

Clearly Liberty Counsel realizes, to some what degree, what sort of culpability they have on their hands with Barber, which is why they saw a need to publicly respond to Randy Thomas' criticisms. And honestly, both Liberty Barber-boxerand Randy should be commended for stepping up and calling out Matt and Pete. But then what does Matt do? He decides to essentially add fuel to the fire and say, "oh no, no -- I TOTALLY said it, just as 'unofficial' Matt, not as "Liberty Counsel Matt.'"! Geez, we knew that "going rogue" is now considered a far-right virtue, but this public undermining of one's employer might be an even worse idea than quitting one's job as governor!

The bottom line: Matt is exactly the kind of liability that we've always said he is! Hell, the only reason why he came into the "pro-family" spotlight spotlight in the first place is because he was a liability to his bosses at Allstate Insurance! He clearly puts more stock in his own desire to demonize gays than he does in his movement's desire to foster the "nice, sweet, loving" Christian charade. If the far-right groups want to keep propagating his verbal tirades, that is their right. But they do so at their own peril.

So, the ping-pong expressions of the anti-gay folks continue. "We're fair-minded traditionalists with no animus toward gays," competing with their inner dialogue, "Gay stuff is icky; those people and their relationships should not be visible, much less equal."

I thought Randy Thomas pulled off some pretty deft rhetorical gymnastics in his recent post where he named lgbt folks as both "the oppressed" and "enemies [..who...] want to be victorious over you, corrupt, undermine and destroy you."

Matt: I'm not a bat-poop crazy as Pete.

Pete: Yes you are. You are as bat-poop crazy as me.

Matt: Maybe so, but only in private.

Timothy: Wouldn't you love to read the private email exchanges going on between these two?

So, it sounds like Pete violated that sacred oath sworn between enamored couples. That one that goes something like: "pillow talk must remain in the boudoir!" Or, more appropriately, "what happens in 'Vegas' (even if is is brutal and violent), stays in 'Vegas', bitch!"

I can't stop myself from adding: The fly on that wall probably heard:

Pete: "Whoa! Cowboy! I don't think it's supposed to be this rough!"

Matt: "Did I tell you to talk! Bitch! It's only good when I violently cram this penis into another man’s lower intestine! I like calling it ‘love.’"

Pete: "OOoooooouuuuch! Can I quote you on that!"

Matt: "You're gonna be quotin' me all night long! Bitch!"

His statement is nothing but the absolute truth!
