Humans say dumb things. Allies can say 'sorry'
“During an interview with the cast of The Hurt Locker on Monday, I turned to actor Anthony Mackie and made a joke about “man hugging” in reference to a hug he and fellow actor Jeremy Renner had shared a few weeks earlier on our air. It was meant to be lighthearted, but some were offended by what they believed to be a homophobic comment. That was never my intent, but that doesn’t matter. Words are extremely powerful and should never be chosen lightly, even in a lighthearted moment. I apologize to any and all that I offended. My support of the gay and lesbian community is longstanding and well documented. It has not and will never waver.”

Kudos to her for making a classy apology. :-)

Progress.
Now when are enough people going to call out Jimmy Kimmel for his virtual second career mocking gays with his ongoing "I'm F--king Ben Affleck" routines? The original cost thousands to produces, involving outdoor location shooting and multiple major star cameos.

Compared to Viera's sin, he's like the James Cameron of "Nudge nudge, we're not really gay, wink wink" extravaganzes. The latest one, shown during the Oscar broadcast Sunday which was watched by over 41 million in the US, had him in bed between Ben and wife Jennifer Garner.

A slight variation was shown during his own post Oscars show tackily tacked on to a "Handsome Man Club" skit built upon the same homophobic "joke" and included a dozen+ major and minor "straight" male stars.

Last night he showed outtakes from the filming of the bed scene with Affleck & Garner in which her genuine discomfort was barely covered with a nervous laugh and Kimmel jokingly asked the cameraman if his erection was visible lying next to Affleck.
Will his next one be in 3D?

Very eloquent, and exactly what a true ally of LGBTs should offer.
It would be nice, though, to she her in a PSA where she identifies with others who may have misgivings about the LGBT community, and offers to them the opportunity to examine themselves to see if that uneasiness can be quelled. It's one thing to recognize that one has been insensitive, but quite another to attempt to address the underlying cause of that insensitivity. And, then, still quite another to then attempt to help others to address their own issues.
