Minnery v. Non-starters
More from Focus on the Family's Peter LaBarbera initiated SCOTUS turnaround that we told you about earlier. This from Plum Line's Greg Sargent:
I wanted a bit more on this. So I asked the author of this statement, Tom Minnery, a senior vice president with the group, how this backtracking came about.
“I don’t think it’s correct to say we’re backtracking,” he told me. “We didn’t get it right the first time.”
Asked if the new statement meant that being homosexual is a deal-breaker, Minnery replied: “Someone who is a practicing homosexual is a non starter for the group.” Asked if this was the case no matter what the person’s views, he replied: “That’s correct.”
Religious Right Group: No Gay SCOTUS Pick No Matter What [Plum Line]
So you hear that, gay kids? Study every day, rise to the top of your class, attend and graduate from Harvard and Yale, develop a judicial record that is so fair-minded it would make a finely tuned scale look biased, and you just might find yourself up for the most esteemed position available in your field. But love one person of the same sex, and "pro-family" folks like Mr. Minnery will invalidate every other one of your characteristics simply because their cherry-picked interpretations of the Bible find you to be a "non-starter" in the universal court of morality. Because to Focus on the Family, there is indeed a glass ceiling -- one that can only be shattered by putting a penis into a vagina.
It's sad, it's offensive, it's judgmental, and it's thoroughly un-American. It's just another day in Focus on the Family's anti-gay wing.
