Book crude event, get a cruel sign
This is the first report we've heard from today's Augusta, ME, National Organization for Marriage rally:
About 100 people attended the rally, and a few held signs. One sign said "Is it loving to bring children into a destructive lifestyle?"

Now, to be fair, this sign could be an anomaly, with the others focused on NOM's stated cause: Marriage. We've yet to see pics.
But at the very least, it does seem indicative of the coarsening rhetoric that so many of us are noticing on the other side. And it's way past time for NOM to either stand against it, or accept the fact -- THE FACT! -- that this all-encompassing "gays are evil" mindset is the way that a frighteningly sizable portion of their staunchest supporters interpret the "protect marriage" message.

**And now in much happier, more peaceful news from this Augusta day:
Gov. John Baldacci made a surprise appearance at a press conference this morning in which supporters of same-sex marriage emphasized why they will continue to fight for full marriage rights.
The group of more than 100 cheered and clapped when Baldacci rounded the corner from his office and stood at the foot of the Hall of Flags steps. He said a few brief words before heading out the side door.

**UPDATE: Wait a minute: We're not so sure we're even buying the "100 people" figure for the NOM rally. Stephan at Maine Watch Dog has just posted his coverage of the event -- his photos make attendance look like considerably more slight:
