Maryland Del. Hershey: Marriage vote brought to you by letters N-O-M
If one writes MD Delegate Steve Hershey (R) about marriage equality in the state, this is the form letter he or she will get back in return:
Why the highlighted text? Oh, well, because: It's the very same line the National Organization For Marriage pushes in its "marriage talking points" guidebook:
I. THE MOST EFFECTIVE SINGLE SENTENCE:
Extensive and repeated polling agrees that the single most effective message is:
"Gays and Lesbians have a right to live as they choose,
they don’t have the right to redefine marriage for all of us."
This allows people to express support for tolerance while opposing gay marriage. Some modify it to “People have a right to live as they choose, they don’t have the right to redefine marriage for all of us.”
MARRIAGE TALKING POINTS [NOM]
I mean, come on! It's one thing to see all these lawmakers following NOM towards the apparently tantalizing light of unfortunate civil rights opposition. But seriously, nation's elected conservatives: Do you also have to hand over your ability to speak from your own hearts and minds?! Is our modern political reality really that fake/cynical/bought?!
And good God of Falwell: What kind of dirt does Maggie Gallagher have on the modern Republican party?
