NYC: Another anti-gay rally, another civil marriage/personal faith obfuscation
The Bronx already had to suffer through a rally where a presiding pastor said that "those who practice [homosexuality] are worthy to death", another preacher said "breaking traditional marriage" will bring 'judgement and wrath of God' just like Sodom & Gommorah, Sen Ruben Diaz' own wife called gays an "abomination" and based all of her civil rights opposition in her personal faith, a Puerto Rican speaker said that local star Ricky Martin is opening the gates of hell, and much, much more. Now it's the borough of Manhattan's turn to feel the "protect marriage" love:
We have We are asking clergy to participate in a Press Conference on the steps of the New York City Hall on Tuesday, June 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We are urging all people to rally outsidethe gate of New York City Hall during and after the Press Conference from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We are also urging every believer to give to the Lord at least one day of fasting and prayer during the next two weeks so that we have divine intervention in stopping the mayor's and governor’s influence from prevailing!
(New York City Hall is in Manhattan at the intersection of Murray Street and Broadway)
All participating clergy must pre-register by emailing us at [email protected] so we can clear you at the gate with security (this is required by the NYPD). Also, there is a limit of 250 clergy that can register, so please register as soon as possible! Clergy who lives outside of New York State can still support us by standing with us on the steps of City Hall as the church prophetically responds to the mayor.
This event will include a diverse, multi-ethnic, multi-denominational group of clergy associations and denominations including City Action Coalition, Christ Covenant Coalition, Concerned Citizens of New York, CONLICO, Empire Baptist Missionary Convention, International Communion of Evangelical Churches, Long Island Evangelical Association, Long Island Hispanic Pastoral Association, Mission New York, National Organization for Marriage, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, Staten Island Evangelical Association, and many others.
Please feel free to spread the word to other members of the clergy and urge all to join City Action Coalition on Tuesday, June 14 at 11:30 a.m. on the steps of New York City Hall!

Right. So what's this Joseph Mattera guy all about? Well, for insight, we really need to look no further than this Powerpoint titled:
Matter's number one bullet point -- number one, above all else -- is this:

That's the kind of mindset these folks plan to use to school city and state government on why we need "divine intervention in stopping the mayor's and governor’s influence from prevailing" -- the idea that families like that of NYC Council Speaker Chris Quinn spring from the loins of Beelezbub himself. And it's not even just marriage -- it's homosexuality itself that Mattera wants folks to see as satanic.
You know, if these folks would even once hold a rally filled with nothing but lawyers and legislators and civil servants, we would at least respect their fight a little more. But they won't. They can't. They need to use this wholly ancillary, in no way targeted notion of religion and religious ceremony to fill the coffers and muddy the debate. They need to invoke divine war, because invoking constitutional fairness would raise too many unanswerable questions.
But then again: Maybe that's just my master the devil talking.
