ADF pens NY clerk memo (a.k.a. casting call for future 'protect marriage' campaign ad)

by Jeremy Hooper

With less than a week to go before in-state same-sex marriages are set to begin in NY, the far-right crowd is stepping up the victimization meme. The latest comes in the form of an Alliance Defense Fund memo, which all but actively seeks out future stories that the "protect marriage" crowd can use in their talking points:

New York Clerk Accommodation Memo

Refusing to do a CIVIL job whenever someone the clerk sees as a "sinner" walks through the door? Okay, ADF: Then let's see a corresponding memo wherein adultery, divorce-and-remarriage, sex before wedlock, atheism, pro-choice advocacy, or any other matter that the religious right sees as a conflict is also presented as a justifiable violation of a clerk's personally-held-religious beliefs. Because if the goal is for a clerk to be able to pick and choose which CIVIL marriages he or she can license in accord with his or her beliefs, then let's not be hypocrites. Let's not look unduly gay-focused. Let's stand by the convictions that groups like the ADF supposedly hold so dear: Let's extend these convictions to the heteros too!

But of course that will never happen, because there's no campaign mileage, ad campaign, or fundraising to be gained.
