NH's leading lobby group pushes 'ex-gay' therapy; Rick Perry to either repudiate it or lend tacit approval
On October 28, Texas Governor and current GOP presidential frontrunner Rick Perry is going to toast New Hampshire's Cornerstone Policy group, keynoting the organization's annual fundraising dinner. So when he does, it's important for people to know that the potential White House occupant will be saluting a group that instructs its supporters to deal with homosexuality in one way and one way alone: By pushing gays into scientifically-discredited "ex-gay" therapy. In fact, Cornerstone pushes its "ex-gay" advocacy on a very same web page where Perry's appearance is touted:
As you surely know, all four of these groups -- Love Won Out, NARTH, Exodus, and PFOX -- are solely focused on so-called preparative therapy or "pray away the gay" strategies. And that is the one and only place where Cornerstone, the group leading the attempt to overturn civil marriage equality in NH, focuses its gay-centric efforts. They don't even link to general policy groups like FRC or NOM. On this "issue" it's a "change the gays" strategy and nothing else.
This is not a minor thing. This is a major GOP star lending credence to a leading state group that not only wants to stop LGBT people's civil rights, but to also stop human beings from living their truths. Quite literally. If that sounds absurd, it's because it is. But it's also now a part of the 2012 campaign season.
