Audio: MD Catholic Conf. head asks, refutes rhetorical civil unions question

by Jeremy Hooper

At today's Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee hearing on marriage equality, Mary Ellen Russell, Exec. Director of the state Catholic Conference, made a point of asking, "Why can't we have civil unions?" in order to make our side look like the uncompromising one. But then, less than three minutes later, she comes right out and admits what we always know about our opposition -- that they never support civil unions themselves when it comes down to it!

Here's that exchange:

Now, obviously the request for us to get in a separate line in order to obtain our rights is offensive on its face. But with this, we have an extra layer of insult. Here we have someone who's leading the charge to stop us from getting our rights asking, as part of a clear an obvious strategy, "What about civil unions?" But why would she even bring that up when she fully admits that her employer is never going to go for that?! Why are we constantly being asked to make concessions against an opposition that only ever goes along because they see zero chance to hang on to what they'd really want?!

As I said: Insulting
