Ironically, it's NOM that's hiding gender here
NOM is outraged that a "lesbian couple" would do such a thing:

Right. Except the thing is: Kieran Cooper is a man and Beck Laxton is a woman. That reality might make the couple fit into lots of "l" categories, but lesbian ain't one of 'em.
Guess it's kind of like any habit. When you're so used to shunning one kind of couple, the writing becomes rote.
