Hey Kirk: Dish the dangerous rhetoric, deal with the growing pains!

by Jeremy Hooper

I'm so tired of this kind of response:

"[Kirk] Cameron is thankful for the thousands of emails and comments that he's received from those who value the freedom to express one's beliefs," the actor's rep said in an e-mail statement.
[ABC News]

Did anyone anywhere suggest that Kirk Cameron lacks the freedom to speak his mind? NO! What we have said is that if someone uses his Screen Shot 2012-03-06 At 8.43.39 Amor her heightened platform to push dangerous misinformation about LGBT people, then those of us who know the potential harms attached to those hostile views are going to use our own freedom to challenge said misinformation! That's actually the way debate works.

All of us have a right to shout ours views from the rooftops (barring local noise restrictions), but none of us possess the right to pundit in a vacuum. All too often, when voices of anti-LGBT hostility are called out for the nonsense that they themselves chose to put on the record, they respond by accusing the chorus of voices who challenge their views of being intolerant, anti-freedom, rude, or worse. That is deflective hogwash! If you have the fortitude to go on national television and present certain views that crudely stigmatize a certain population, then you must make sure you retain enough spine to defend those views against their likely challengers.

Acting like pushback from the other side constitutes some sort of unfairly placed muzzle? That's gutless, at best.
