Video: Santorum couldn't have booked a more LGBT-hostile event; but there's still time
On Friday, I told you that GOP frontrunner Rick Santorum would be spending this Sunday evening speaking at the church of one extremely, extremely, EXTREMELY anti-LGBT Senior Pastor. Well, that appearance did happen tonight, and that very same extremely, extremely, EXTREMELY anti-LGBT Senior Pastor, Dennis Terry, did in fact lead the service, where he painted church/state separation as a lie, positioned his congregants as the only ones who can "save" America, encouraged his flock to "irritate America" with their godly "salt," said the church is to be the "conscience" of the nation, and told all Americans who don't like his Christian views to leave the country ("we don't worship Buddha we don't worship Mohammmad we don't worship allah…we worship Jesus Christ," delivered to standing ovation). Oh, and Pastor Terry also said that "as long as sexual perversion is becoming normalized, someone needs to stand up and say 'God have mercy on us'." and went in a tirade against marriage equality ("NO! NO! NO! NO!") before introducing Santorum.
But it didn't end there, folks. No, no -- there was actually an unforeseen bonus round. Because you know who actually showed up to speak directly to candidate Santorum? Well that would Tony Perkins, natch. In fact, the man whose organization (Family Research Council) is one of the few designated an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and who has quite proudly called gay people "hateful…vile"…"pawns of "the enemy," got to bend Rick Santorum's ear for a good hour or more, where topics included a vow to "restore" the Don't Ask Don't Tell ban on openly gay soldiers and an over ally attempt to apply religious freedom only in a way that grants far-right evangelicals the freedom to legislative their beliefs without scrutiny, much less pushback.
Both clips below (two hours in full):
**Pastor Terry's earlier views:
#1: Comparing gays to alcoholics, drug users, liars, and thieves, all of whom are cast out of heaven:
#2: It's "simply a perversion":
#3: "No human being has ever been born gay," says non-science:
#4: Gays can and should "change," professional "ex-gay" advocate Joseph Nicolosi says so:
#5: More equating us with alcoholics, before moving on to a clumsy attempt at a pedophilia link:
#6: Gays are coming after your children and grandchildren:
#7: Sexually transmitted diseases are God's punishment:
