NC voters consider divisive amendment (in 1956)
On the eighth day of another month in another year, North Carolina voters were asked to weigh in on another kind of constitutional amendment:
This amendment (dubbed The Pearsall Plan) handily passed, only to be overturned as unconstitutional in the next decade.
If passed today, the current marriage amendment will most certainly be overturned as well, likely in less than a decade's time. But wouldn't it be nice to neutralize the train now rather than send it back down the same regressive tracks that later generations are always forced to repair?
