Mike Huckabee won't defend what Dan Cathy *actually* said; because he can't, knows it'd drain support

by Jeremy Hooper

Mike Huckabee may think the anti-gay parts of the Bible are lock solid. However, he better also hope that the bear false witness parts are a lie. Listen to this unbelievably misrepresentative assessment of the Chick-fil-A situation:

First off, the obvious—Huckabee is continuing to ignore what Dan Cathy actually said. To wit:

DAN CATHY, president and COO of Chick-fil-A:"It's very clear in Romans chapter 1, if we look at society today, we see all the twisted up kind of stuff that's going on. Washington trying to redefine the definition of marriage and all the other kinds of things that we go—if you go upstream from that, in Romans chapter 1, you will see that because we have not acknowledged God and because we have not thanked God, that we have been left victim to the foolishness of our own thoughts, and as result, we are suffering the consequences of a society and culture who has not acknowledged God or not thanked God—he's left us to a deprived mind. It's tragic and we live in a culture of that today.""

DAN CATHY: (1:05)"…I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say 'we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage' and I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about"

Dan Cathy's words go far beyond marriage. He quite literally accused gay people (i.e. gay consumers) of having the ability to draw a godly rebuke via nothing more than their love.

But beyond just this continued pattern of overlooking the facts, Mike Huckabee is seriously saying that Dan Cathy has the same position that Obama, Clinton, and Biden had before this summer?! That is beyond outrageous! Not only are the words that came out of Cathy's mouth something that none of those three would ever utter, but we must also consider the company's aggressive financing of anti-LGBT groups, outreach efforts with prominent anti-equality figures, or their STATED BAN ON GAY COUPLES staying at their WinShape Retreat center. This not just about marriage policy—it's about a COO (and the man who all acknowledge is the company's most prominent face) who pits gay people against God himself!

Mike Huckabee can call people like me mean, militant, nasty, or any of the other ad hominem labels that he thinks are suited to his "values" agenda. All I ask is that he be honest about the lay of the land. I want more speech, not less. But a good Christian man owes it to all of us to embrace HONEST speech rather than political spin!
