'And even an armed gunman'—NOM shamelessly equates Chick-fil-action with crazed violence

by Jeremy Hooper

I've already shown you how the National Organization for "Driving a Wedge between Blacks and Gays" is using its new "Save The Republic & Marriage" site to make the unbelievably claim that its cause is like that of slavery's abolitionists. But check out this other claim from that same site, which is not as offensive in one sense but is almost more offensive in another:

Dan Cathy’s recent public support for “the biblical definition of the family unit” elicited a well-documented series of attacks from the media, customers, politicians, and even an armed gunman. In contrast, high profile financial and political support for gay marriage is met with public—praise and never a coordinated effort to curtail free speech.

Okay, first off—Dan Cathy did not just support "the biblical definition of the family unit." In addition to his operation's anti-gay donations and assorted goings on (its Winshape retreat expressly bans gays couples; holds anti-equality marriage seminars; etc.), Dan Cathy actually said all this about gay people and our power to draw God's wrath:

DAN CATHY, president and COO of Chick-fil-A:"It's very clear in Romans chapter 1, if we look at society today, we see all the twisted up kind of stuff that's going on. Washington trying to redefine the definition of marriage and all the other kinds of things that we go—if you go upstream from that, in Romans chapter 1, you will see that because we have not acknowledged God and because we have not thanked God, that we have been left victim to the foolishness of our own thoughts, and as result, we are suffering the consequences of a society and culture who has not acknowledged God or not thanked God—he's left us to a deprived mind. It's tragic and we live in a culture of that today.""

DAN CATHY: (1:05)"…I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say 'we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage' and I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about"

That is very different.

But that aside—how dare NOM take a crazed armed gunman who EVERY REASONABLE PERSON DENOUNCED and lump him in with those of us who have used our free speech to respond to Dan Cathy's words and actions? That is so ungodly offensive. Politicians, the media, customers, comedians—we have all responded to Chick-fil-A in the fair and free way that we Americans respond to things we don't care for, the same way NOM has responded to companies it doesn't support (Starbucks, General Mills, T Mobile, etc). And in fact, there is no real organized boycott of Chick-fil-A, the way NOM has pushed boycotts of the companies I just named. Most of us are simply interested in putting the facts out and letting the public makes its own decisions. That's kind of how this discourse thing works.

Oh and yes, people who support marriage equality earn praise. News flash, NOM: you're on the wrong side of this issue! People heap praise on those who do the right thing because, well—hold on to your discriminatory hats for this one—those people did the right thing! This is not some media conspiracy against NOM. It's not some sort of double standard concocted by operatives. No, no—it's the foretelling sound of freedom giving you, NOM, an appetizer of what a fairer and freer future will consider to be commonplace.
