Shannon Bream hosts FRC lovefest; no insight into Tony Perkins or Gallaudet

by Jeremy Hooper

Obviously, those of us who know his true record are troubled whenever Tony Perkins is booked as an "expert" without the anchor giving any insight into who he is or how he routinely engages. That goes without saying (even if I've certainly said it countless times).

But in this Fox News appearance, there is an even deeper level of deceit going on. Watch it and I'll get back to you:

Okay, so Tony is working overtime to make this into something that "we" did, with "we" of course meaning all of us who advocate for marriage equality. Tony positions this not as one decision by one university but rather as an indicator of what marriage equality means for Maryland and America. In fact, he suggests that it's something we marriage equality activists are actively courting.

Only thing? OUR CAMPAIGN IN MARYLAND HAS COME OUT AGAINST THE GALLAUDET DECISION! Forcefully, in fact:

BALTIMORE – Marylanders for Marriage Equality took a full-page ad out in The Capital newspaper today condemning the suspension of Gallaudet University’s Dr. Angela McCaskill. The ad text is below.
We condemn the suspension of Gallaudet University’s Dr. Angela McCaskill last week. She should be reinstated immediately.
Unfortunately, opponents of marriage equality are trying to make what happened to Dr. McCaskill about Question 6, the November ballot measure that will allow gay and lesbian couples to get a civil marriage license and protects religious freedom. But her suspension from a DC university has nothing to do with Question 6 in Maryland. It does however have everything to do with being able to express one’s opinions, freely, and participate in the political process.

MDFME TAKES OUT NEWSPAPER AD CONDEMNING SUSPENSION OF GALLAUDET OFFICER [MDFME]

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22, 2012 -- /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Rev. Delman Coates and Rev. Donte Hickman, two leading advocates for Maryland's Civil Marriage Protection Act, announced their support Monday for Dr. Angela McCaskill, the chief diversity officer at Gallaudet University who was put on leave after signing a petition to send Maryland's marriage equality law to a public referendum. "It is unacceptable for Dr. McCaskill to be professionally sanctioned for merely exercising her right as a citizen in our democracy," said Coates and Hickman in a joint statement. These are facts. But does the anchor, Shannon Bream, ever once mentioned these facts? NO! She just lets Tony play the victim, spinning it as some sort of "PR nightmare" for the pro-equality view. She's not conducting an interview with him, a man who calls gays "pawns of the enemy"—she's hosting a full blown lovefest ("always good to see you") through which Tony has an unfettered, unchallenged megaphone for pushing his agenda.

It's outrageously negligent.
