Shirley Phelps-Roper on daughters' defections: Meh

by Jeremy Hooper

Shirley Phelps-Roper responds to the news that her daughters Megan and Grace, just like her son Josh before them, have defected the infamous Westboro Baptist Church:

Hi Jeremy –

The standards of God have not changed. Gal. 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, reveling, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

The New Testament is full of people that started right, but then fell away. Christ himself speaks of this in the following parable.
Mat. 13:3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

Christ also said those of your own household would be put a variance with one another.
Mat. 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 1Jo 2:19

Christ said at Mat. 7:13 that that strait is the gate and narrow is the way that leads to life and few there be that find it, but broad is the way and wide is the gate that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.

This service to God is completely voluntary and God is not respecter of persons.

We have no say on who is appointed to mercy and no say on who is appointed to wrath. All I have is a lively hope, and an urgency every day to seek tokens that my own calling in election is sure. You see my young, rebellious friend, I am no different than any other human in that I am full of sin and without a single merit of my own. BUT, if God would have mercy upon me, I have everything. It is all I care about, and all that I live for. There is nothing in this life worth having or doing except to serve my King, and to pray that his will be done and to ask that I be MADE and FOUND worthy to escape the affliction that is coming on the whole earth and that I be made and found worthy to stand before my Lord.

Meanwhile, ALL of creation is groaning and travailing – they have ONE question, to wit: WHO ARE THE SONS OF GOD!! The great cloud of witnesses watches, even as this generation is watching to see that question answered, unfolding before our eyes, ALL seeing and learn as we go!!

Thanks for asking.

Your friends at Westboro Baptist Church

Not for nothing, Shirl, but it seems as if you are leading the pack in terms of birthing those who grow up and flee Westboro. Kind of interesting that you'd go around the country protesting every other mother's children, with cries that they raised their children for hell, while neglecting what seems to be the failing personal standard within your own prayerful home.
