Maggie doesn't want us treated cruelly, just as less 'normative' than heterosexuals

by Jeremy Hooper
"I personally still cherish the hope that we can as a society eliminate cruel homophobia without jettisoning heteronormativity — which is the need for social norms and institutions to be oriented strongly around the problem and the blessing that sex between men and women makes babies."

Maggie Gallagher

Heteronormativity is a fallacy that never was. Cruel homophobia is a manifestation that stems from the insistence that heteronormativity both is and should be.

When looking back on her decades of work, Maggie can use the labels "heteronormativity," "homophobia," "traditional values," or "pomegranate sundae," for all I care. But I refuse to let her deny her hand in pushing society in a way that both denies and demonizes LGBT people. She simply has. Sadly.
