Mark Regnerus to join ADF at UN event

by Jeremy Hooper

Ranging from the eradication of poverty to the combatting of HIV/AIDS, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are an eight-part UN initiative designed to tackle global problems that most all of us can surely agree need solving. But now we have some familiar names trying to inject the anti-LGBT mindset into the debate.

This week, the extremely anti-LGBT Alliance Defending Freedom Organization will cohost (with likeminded Mexican counterpart Incluyendo Mexico) a side event designed to "respecting life and strengthening the family" as a way of achieving the broader goals. Anti-LGBT attorney Alan Sears says of the event:

“At this crucial time in history when the sanctity of life and the human family are assaulted at every turn, there is an urgent need to address delegates of the United Nation and make them aware of the importance of protecting the dignity and freedom of every human being,” says Alliance Defending Freedom President, CEO, and General Counsel Alan Sears.

But while Sears is certainly no friend to our movement, just wait until you see who else is scheduled to speak at the event:

Special Guest Speakers:
Rick Perry – Governor of the State of Texas (invited)
Alan Sears – President, CEO & General Counsel, Alliance Defending Freedom
Dr. Elard Koch – Director at MELISA Institute in Chile
Dr. Mark Regnerus – Sociologist and Senior Fellow at the Austin Institute
Life And Family: A New Approach to Reach the Millennium Development Goals [CEvent]

Yup, that's right—none other than Mark Regnerus, the researcher whose right-manufactured "study" that purported to be about same-sex-headed families has been widely and resounding debunked. This is who the anti-LGBT ADF thinks is fit to school the United Nations on proper family structure. Guess that whole " protecting the dignity and freedom of every human being" thing doesn't apply to the loving parents whose homes Regnerus and his cohorts have so deliberately sought to malign.

And as for Gov. Rick Perry? Please. He's likely just listed as "invited" in order to increase cachet (a popular trick with far-right political events). But if he shows, there's another one whose work on the dignity of the family has put the banning, barring, and general maligning of the LGBT-headed family front and center. Is that really the path toward global development? Is the American "culture war" really something we care to export?
