Frank Schubert's CA coalition: Supporting trans studentss is to use them 'as weapons in a culture war'

by Jeremy Hooper

As you probably know, the anti-LGBT crowd in California (a team headed by NOM's political director, Frank Schubert) is trying to reject a recently passed law that mandates basic safeguards for transgender students in the Golden State's public schools. Now check out this text from a bulletin insert that the coalition is distributing to Golden State churches:

The proponents of the bill are recognizing the truth that certain students do, in fact, identify as a gender other than the one assigned at birth. Science supports this truth.

But here we have grown adults who should know better stepping in with a faith-based (and egotistical, i would say) insistence that their personally-held religious opinions about gender should trump the sound policies of a state's public school system. In a non-politicized version of this story, no coalition would rally to overturn this law, because in this more perfect version, no grown adult would waste his or her time trying to make the school day harder for certain students (many of whom are vulnerable enough already). But that's not our world. In our world, deeply faith-driven organizations like the National Organization For Marriage (Catholic, in NOM's case) insist on jumping in with their usual campaigns of deceit, doing all they can to "frustrate and deny" the great truths of our mortal world and its broad spectrum of reality.

They have a right to waste time and energy (not to mention good will) engaging in this way, as far as it goes. But let's be clear here: the people really using children "as weapons in a culture war" are the ones who need their to be a "culture war" in order to stay in bu$ine$$.
