Miami Archbishop: Take US Catholics' majority position, lose your job

by Jeremy Hooper

Even well before we had so many states proving how benign and peaceful the notion of civil marriage equality really is, a sizable majority of US Catholics stood in support of the freedom. Sadly, that hasn't stopped the leadership from threatening those who channel their religious freedom in a supportive way:

On Tuesday, the Archbishop of Miami, Thomas Wenski, sent a letter to his employees lamenting the arrival of marriage equality to the state and warning staff members that they could lose their jobs if they post anything to social media to express support for same-sex marriage.

It's not only offensive, but it's also wholly unsustainable. What constitutes supporting marriage equality in a world where thirty-six states offer the legal right, top-rated TV shows feature married gay couples, every major brand stands in support of the notion, and a majority of the US public (including, again, a majority of US Catholics) back the idea? Is someone going to get fired if they flout NOM's Starbucks boycott since that coming is a major backer of marriage equality? Is an employee going to lose her job if she tweets positively about married gay Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris? If your internet history shows that you checked out the wedding registry of one of the many same-sex couples in your life who will surely be marrying in the next decade, are you going to get pink slipped?

I mean, I know that people like the Archbishop love to believe that the freedom to marry is some sort of niche concept, but the truth is that it is a consensus position that is now firmly and forever ingrained in the fabric of America. Threatening to fire people for supporting a right that is legal in a majority of our states and under federal law—not to mention one that does nothing more than honor love, commitment, family, and the reality of the human condition—is downright chilling.
